With 'roots' based in traditional healing methods thousands of years old, herbals and botanical extracts are a part of almost all regional health paradigms. This category has been the basis for drug development for centuries and even new screening technologies use plant-based materials to determine bioactivity and new product candidates. Questions prevail about regulations for highly processed extracts or those with high phytoactivity.
Nutracon 2010 will delve into these issues and the emerging markets for botanicals, particularly for food, beverages and nutricosmetics. Recent market numbers from Nutrition Business Journal show an overlapping trend from the Nutracon SuperFruits track in 2009. Though the overall botanical and herbal market grew by only 1% to $4.8 billion in 2008, a further $647 million was contributed directly by noni, mangosteen, and goji.
