2009 NutrAward Finalists
There is perhaps no greater honor than to be recognized by one’s peers. Each year, industry leaders gather at the annual Nutracon conference to recognize one of their business associates for the best new use of a functional ingredient for the NutrAward.
In past years, the recipient of this prized award benefitted greatly in the months and even years following because of added media and industry attention. This year is no different. The Nutracon conference advisory board and NutrAward judging panel is looking forward to seeing the innovative products from this year’s entries.

Celebrating Innovation
The NutrAward winner is selected based on a weighted vote by the selection committee, as well as by a vote of Nutracon attendees. Voting is based on how well the ingredient or product meets the defined criteria which includes:
- Scientific Merit
- Efficacy
- Market Potential
- Safety
- Innovation
- Ability to Increase Market Credibility

Gourmetceuticals, PPL-240™
Gourmetceuticals, PPL-240 is an antioxidant derived from a South American fern, Polypodium leucotomos. Clinical oral and topical research demonstrated its photoprotective ability to protect cell damage caused by the sun’s UV-A and UV-B rays. Honorable Mention
As is always the case with these decisions, there was one entry that stood out for its unique properties and market potential. But the judges were limited to three choices. The Nutracon advisory board felt compelled to name an honorable mention.
Morishita Jintan Co., Ltd for their seamless encapsulation process to encase live freeze dried bifidobacterium. The technology solves an ongoing problem of allowing the capsule to reach the intestine, while retaining the properties of the live bacteria. The process also allows for mass production of encapsulations for food, beverages and dietary supplements.
